N.J. Burkett is an American correspondent working at WABC-TV in New York since July 1989. Prior to joining WABC-TV, he worked at WFSB-TV in Hartford, Connecticut where he served as a correspondent and shoreline Bureau Chief.

Burkett works at WABC-TV where he serves as a correspondent. Over the years, Burkett has reported on everything including politics, war, diplomacy, crime, natural disasters, police misconduct, race relations, and aviation disasters. Together with his photographer, they had a narrow escape when two jets struck the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Later on, their work was viewed on television news broadcasts across the nation and all over the world. For almost three months, he covered the 2003 Iraq war and the military build-up that preceded it.

In addition, he has also    terrorist bombings in Madrid in 2004 and London in 2005, the war between Hezbollah and Israel that took place in 2006, Southern Lebanon, the death of a Palestinian leader, three Israeli national elections, the Israeli-Hamas War in Gaza from 2009 to 2010, and Yasir Arafat in 2004. Furthermore, he also saw the 2005 historic Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the chronicled the Palestinian popular uprising. N.J was the only New York television news correspondent who reported the historic 9.0 earthquake in Japan. He also reported on the 2011 nuclear accident and he was the first of his colleagues to report from Haiti after the 2010earthquake.

While working in New York, he has been among WABC-TV lead reporters for several of its region’s biggest stories including; landmark police misconduct trials, Superstorm Sandy the crash of TWA Flight 800, and the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In the winter of 2001, he went undercover for a number of weeks disguising himself as a homeless man after the homeless New Yorkers complained about the city’s municipal shelters being unsafe. Together with his undercover photographer, they slept in New York’s most notorious men’s shelter.

Over the years, his work has received recognition with a number of the most prestigious awards in American television news. The Radio Television Digital News Association awarded her with two Edward R. Murrow Awards, 4 Emmy Awards have been awarded to him inclusive of the Emmy for Outstanding On-Camera Achievement in 2007 and 2003. In total, he has received fifteen Emmy Nominations in addition to sharing with, his colleagues at ABC News the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award and the George Foster Peabody Award for reporting on the September 11th terrorist attacks. Furthermore, Montclair State University awarded him with the Allen B. DuMont Broadcaster of the Year Award in 2008, for his contributions to the field of broadcasting.

In addition, he is a past President of the Academy’s flagship chapter in New York, a former Trustee, and the First Vice Chairman of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Prior to joining WABC-TV, he worked at the CBS station in Hartford, Connecticut from 1986 to 1989 when he left the station. Burkett attended Columbia University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master’s in International Affairs.
