After graduating, she started as a volunteer at Radio Reading Service, WUFT-FM from September 2011 through to December 2011. She then joined NABJ Student Projects as an anchor and reporter in 2013, serving for less than a year. On June 2013, she joined CBS News as a fellow, assisting producers on shoots, researching information for stories, and also transcribing interviews. She served the station for three months until August 2013, before joining CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship 2014 as a reporter/anchor on March 2014.

She then joined Gainesville Television Network as a nightside reporter from August 2012 to May 2014. Smith served as an anchor, reporter, and producer at WUFT-TV in Gainesville, Florida Area from January 2013 to May 2014. There she anchored, wrote, edited, and produced spot news and featured-length pieces ranging from healthcare to the 2012 presidential election that aired on The Front Page Edition of All Things Considered. She also wrote, produced, and anchored live cut-ins for Morning Edition.

Smith joined WAGT, NBC26 as a General assignment reporter and multimedia journalist in June 2014. During her time there, she also worked as a weekend morning anchor and producer until her departure on May 2016 after two years. She then joined WSPA 7 News, Spartanburg, SC as a general assignment reporter on May 2016. Smith worked with video journalists to craft television news packages, VOs, and VOSOTs. She also appeared in live reporting, web/social media posting, and interviewing a local pastor hosting a community rally. On August 2019, she joined WKRN News 2, in Nashville, Tennessee as a news anchor. She has served the station full-time for four years to the present, as well as starting as the midday anchor.
