Peter Van Sant is an American Emmy-Award-Winning Reporter/Correspondent/Anchor/Author/Writer working for CBS News as a “48 Hours” Correspondent in the United States since December 1998. He joined the network in the year February 1984 as a News Correspondent.

Van Sant works with CBS News where he serves the station as a Correspondent for “48 Hours.” Previously, he was based in Atlanta for about six years. There, he was a correspondent for the “CBS Evening News.” While there, he was covering the space program, the south, and specializing in the aviation industry. His Investigative report on the high number of medical helicopter crashes earned him his first Emmy Award in the year 1986.

Later on, he was assigned to the London bureau between 1989 and 1991. He also reported extensively on the collapse of the Soviet Union. This report helped him earn a Columbia University- Alfred I. DuPont Award. Asides from this, he covered the first Gulf War, famine in Africa, and the reunification of Germany, among other stories that took him throughout the Middle East and Europe.

After this, he made a move to New York where he was reporting for the CBS News magazine “Street Stories” between 1991 and 1993. This is in addition to reporting for America Tonight in 1994. Later on, he was assigned to the “CBS Evening News” where he served between 1995 and 1997. There, he was privileged to receive an Emmy Award for his report on the economic and social collapse in Albania.

He has also contributed to three primetime specials, “Smithsonian Fantastic Journey.” This included reports on a study of lions in Africa which scientists hoped would lead to a cure for AIDS. Asides from this, he covered efforts to save cheetahs in Namibia and covered the plague of brown tree snakes in Guam. After this, he was named a correspondent for “Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel” where he served between 1997 and 1998.

Then, he was the first television journalist to report on the devastating famine in North Korea. While there, he was privileged to receive his third Emmy Award. Asides from this, his report on rape in the Balkans resulted in an American Women in Radio and Television Award. Peter was also a part of the CBS News undercover investigative team which found and taped an indicted war criminal in Bosnia. While there, he won an Overseas Press Club Award for the report.

Peter’s hour-long report on terrorists seizing and destroying a school in Beslan, Russia won him both his fourth Emmy Award and the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award. The Beslan report won The Golden Word Award, which is the most prestigious award presented in Russia. His report on the worldwide trafficking of human beings also won a Sigma Delta Chi Award in 2005.

Van Sant was also privileged to win an Overseas Press Club Award for an investigative report on the sale of human organs in Peru. Asides from this he won three Edward R. Murrow Awards for other reports on “48 Hours.” He also reported on 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Virginia Tech shootings. Asides from this, he also interviewed a host of celebrities over the years. These include Christopher Plummer, Julie Andrews, LeAnn Womack, Garth Brooks, Nick Nolte, Ronnie Dunn, and Kix Brooks of the country duo Brooks and Dunn.

The year 206 saw him being made producer/writer for the documentary, “Three Days in September.” This show premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. This film was narrated by Julia Roberts. This film was nominated for an Emmy Award and was named one of the top documentaries of 2006 by New York magazine. Asides from this, he is the co-author of the book, “Perfectly Executed.” This is part of the “48 Hours Mystery” true crime book series published by Simon & Schuster’s Pocket Books.

Prior to joining CBS News, he was working for WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas where he was serving the station as a Reporter. There, he worked between 1982 and 19884.
