Rob Elgas Biography
Rob Elgas is an American ABC7 Chicago reporter and 4 pm anchor who joined the ABC 7 Eyewitness News team as a reporter and fill-in anchor on July 7, 2015. The veteran news anchor and reporter became the co-anchor of ABC 7’s top-rated 4 PM weekday news in May of 2016, alongside Judy Hsu.
On his arrival at Chicago’s most-watched television station, ABC 7’s Vice President of News Jennifer Graves said, “Rob is an accomplished journalist who has confirmed a strong connection with Chicago viewers during his 13 years covering Chicago and suburbs. Elga graduated from the University of Illinois, where he specialized in agricultural communication and journalism, prior to landing his first job in television. Besides he is a member of NAHJ, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Elgas, a Chicago area native, brings more than two decades of news experience to ABC 7. Prior to joining ABC 7, he was working at NBC 5 in Chicago where he anchored the early afternoon news and reported for the late evening news.
An award-winning journalist, he has received several Emmy Awards including an Emmy for breaking news coverage of a devastating tornado in the area. He reported from Naplate, Illinois after a tornado outbreak devastated the small town. He as well co-hosted an Emmy award-winning broadcast of the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival parade with Cheryl Burton, Janet Davies, and Judy Hsu.
Throughout his career, he had been honored with Associated Press and Awards for his live breaking news reporting of protests in 2014 in Chicago. He received Emmy Awards for co-hosting various specials, including a Winter Olympic special, “Hometown Hopeful,” featuring Chicago Olympians. He has covered two Olympics, Italy, the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, and the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
He has traveled to D.C. For the State of the Union, Washington, and included breaking information in California and Texas for ABC 7. But his maximum memorable project becomes overlaying the ancient World Series win through the Chicago Cubs, becoming a member of Mark Giangreco and Jim Rose in Cleveland for breaking information insurance of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.
Before his return to Chicago in 2002, he worked for ABC 7 in El Paso, Texas. He was a weekend anchor prior to co-anchoring the morning show from 2000-2002. He began his broadcasting career behind the lens in Champaign-Urbana, working as a photographer for WICD-TV.
