Having a great interest in weather since he was in first grade, he would always draw pictures of tornadoes and storms. When his teachers saw this they would always jump to conclusion that he might be having problems at home.
Later when he was in the fourth grade his interest grew at a higher rate after a severe storm hit their school. Often, his parents would have to bring him down off the roof before a thunderstorm. His interest grew dramatically after watching a PBS documentary in the 5th grade on storm chasers. It was since then that he knew he would love to become a storm chaser. He began his storm-chasing career in the San Antonio, Texas area in 1992 while chasing storms.
Earlier in 1993 he relocated to Norman with the aim of joining Oklahoma University. There he pursued his degree in meteorology and later earned a B.A. in Geography. Pastrano has featured a variety of storms including the 1999 Oklahoma City tornado outbreak, the infamous 1988 Hurricane Gilbert, and the 1995 baseball-sized hail in the Texas Panhandle that hit his truck. Being a Texan native, he has been featured on several local news affiliates, including CNN.
He went to Antonian College Preparatory High School and later graduated from San Antonio, Texas. Aside from him being a student, he also tenured as an intern where he learned a lot about TV weather at KMOL-TV. He was later 1995 hired at NEWS 9 as a StormTracker where he is currently employed. During his free time, he loves cooking, movies, Fishing, social gatherings, watching OU Football, and traveling.
