Trent Okerson Biography
Trent Okerson is an American meteorologist working for WPSD-TV where he serves as the chief meteorologist and weekday morning and midday meteorologist. He joined WPSD-TV in October 2007, after previously serving as a high school science teacher.
Okerson began serving as the Chief Meteorologist for WPSD-TV in June 2020. He has won the Kentucky Associated Press award for Best Weather Anchor four times and he go an Emmy nomination for his coverage of the historic December 10, 2021 tornado. Metropolis, Illinois is his native home.
He is a native of Metropolis, Illinois and his interest in weather began during his childhood days when his fear of storms turned into fascination. Part of his interest in weather is because of his families connections to past storms. Two of his grandparents resided a mile away from the 1925 Tri-State Tornado in Southern Illinois and another tornado in Massac County in the 1960s destroyed the home his father was brought up in. In addition, when his kindergarten teacher identified his love for weather, he organized an opportunity for him to take a tour of the WPSD weather center on his 6th birthday where he met former chief meteorologist Cal Sisto.
Before he came to Local 6, he spent more than five years in education as a junior high and high school science teacher. While he taught, he also went back and started working on his education at Mississippi State University where he studied meteorology. Later in the summer of 2007, he interned at WPSD and in August 2008, Okerson graduated top of his class with a certificate in Broadcast Meteorology in addition to being awarded the National Weather Association Seal of Approval. in June 2011. During his free time, he enjoys cheering on the St. Louis Blues and the St. Louis Cardinals together with his son, Hansen, running, golfing, and finding yard work to do.
