Valerie Smock Biography
Valarie Smock is an American meteorologist working for WNEP’s weekend morning meteorologist. She joined the WNEP News in April 2016.
Valerie Smock Education
Smock attended Kent State University where she majored in broadcast journalism. She then decided to continue with her studies and attended Mississippi State University, where she attained her Operational Meteorology certificate in 2011. Lastly, she also has an Associate’s Degree in Public Affairs from the Community College of the Air Force.
Valerie Smock Career
Smock airs on WNEP every Saturday and Sunday morning at 5 am. She had also worked for other stations prior to joining WNEP. She previously worked for stations from Great Falls, Montana, to Youngstown, Ohio, and Toledo, Ohio. She nonetheless worked as a Video Broadcaster at AccuWeather in State College, Pennsylvania. Her most recent position was at WPXI in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she served as a meteorologist and weather reporter.
Smock said that Making sure people know what to expect with the weather is crucial, whether it be heading to school or knowing when severe weather may hit. Growing up, she had the full experience of blustery and cold winters as well as the lake-effect snow. She got an opportunity to work in Montana and which gave her the chance to ski, Chinook winds, which enabled her to play golf.
Smock also has a history of working for the military for about 10 years of serving in the military. She also worked in the Air Force Reserve where she served as the Public Affairs Specialist as well as a former Military Police in the Ohio Army National Guard. She has also traveled to many countries and states due to her serving in the military. For instance, she traveled to Kuwait and Germany in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as to Haiti to help with hurricane efforts.
Smock has also been actively assisting with the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure foundation. The foundation set up a 60-mile walk to help fight and find a cure for breast cancer, something she has participated in several times since 2009. She has also assisted those in need as well as the less fortunate by rebuilding homes for them through the Appalachia Service Project. Her passion lies in poetry and is a published poet and a member of the International Society of Poets.
