Zach Horner Biography

Zach Horner is an American journalist currently working at WNDU-TV bringing a variety of experiences to the WNDU newsroom as a multimedia journalist.

Zach Horner Career

Zach graduated from Concord High School in 2004. He graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications-News Option. Zach has worked as a production assistant at 16 News Now before; he interned there in 2007 and worked as a production assistant in between semesters in 2008. Zach’s strong desire to help others led him to earn a Master of Arts in Counseling from Hazelden Graduate School in 2011, with a focus on addictions and dual diagnosis treatment. He is still licensed to practice medicine in the state of Michigan.

In 2015, he succumbed to the news bug. He returned to news as a photojournalist at FOX28 in Elkhart, Indiana, and later as a reporter at NBC affiliate WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He got the call to report the news in Michiana after a trip out west to KOIN6 in Portland, Oregon, and couldn’t be happier to be back home.

On July 15, 1955, WNDU-TV began broadcasting on UHF channel 46 for the first time. The station took over the NBC affiliation from WSJV (channel 28) right away and has remained with the network ever since. Romper Room and the first local telecast of a Notre Dame football game were among the early broadcasts on WNDU. The University of Notre Dame signed a deal to sell the station to a private company on November 24, 2005. Gray Television announced in September 2015 that it would buy Schurz Communications for $442.5 million and sell WSBT-TV to Sinclair Broadcast Group.

The FCC approved the sale on February 12, 2016, and the deal was set to close four days later. Gray announced on February 1, 2021, that it had purchased Quincy Media, the owner of Heroes & Icons affiliate WSJV, for $925 million in cash. Gray intends to create a duopoly with WSJV and WNDU-TV because WSJV is rated lower than the top four stations in the South Bend market.
