Brian Gotter Biography

Brian Gotter is an American award-winning certified meteorologist working at TMJ4. He joined TMJ4 and Storm Team 4 in October 2006 as the midday and early evening meteorologist.

“Fans rode their snowmobiles to the stadium and people were sliding down the steps of Lambeau,” he recalls vividly of the famed “Snow Bowl” in Green Bay when the Packers faced the Buccaneers in 20″ of snow. It was fantastic.”

Brian relocated to the University of Oklahoma, one of the greatest severe storm schools, after a brief love affair with flying in college, where he followed tornadoes and focused on severe weather. In 1996, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Geosciences, and in 1997, he was awarded the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval. Brian has also been honored by the American Meteorological Society with the title of “Certified Broadcast Meteorologist.”

Brian got his first job at KSWO in Lawton, Oklahoma, during his final year of college. Gotter returned to Wisconsin after college to work for WAOW in Wausau, and after barely a year, he was offered a fantastic job at WJXT in Jacksonville, Florida. He covered a lot of severe weather and multiple tropical storms and hurricanes throughout his five-year stay in Jacksonville, including two weeks of Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

Brian worked as a morning show host at WCCO in Minneapolis for four years before joining TODAY’S TMJ4. Gotter received an Emmy award for his morning show in Minneapolis, and he even traveled to New York to work as a fill-in meteorologist on the “CBS Early Show.”

Brian earned an Emmy award for “Best Meteorologist in the Midwest” in 2009 and 2010 since moving to Milwaukee. Brian is also a Ph.D. candidate in climatology at the University of Minnesota. He’s looking into how the frequency of thunderstorms and tornadoes has changed in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Gotter is hoping to publish his findings in meteorological and climate journals.
