He served among the longest-tenured anchor team in Pittsburgh TV history with Peggy Finnegan before her 2020 retirement. The Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters named the anchoring pair Broadcasters of the Year in 2016.
Also, they received the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania’s President’s Award for career achievement in journalism in 2015. Initially, he served the station as an anchor of the noon news and filed reports for the 6 p.m. news. In 1989, he started working as an evening anchor.
Before Pittsburgh, he worked in Atlanta. His TV career started when he was still in college. After college, he worked on the air in Gainesville, Jacksonville, Chattanooga, Orlando, and Atlanta. For his work at WPXI, he has received an Emmy award, various Pittsburgh Press Club Golden Quills, and other regional and local honors.
Johnson has broadcasted big national stories including the Democratic National Convention in 1988. Also, he broadcasted space shuttle launches, the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, the Oklahoma City bombing, and 9/11. He deems the Quecreek Mine rescue his favorite story because he broadcasted it from beginning to end and all nine miners were alive.
Since 2002, he has worked as a weekly volunteer at the National Council of Jewish Women’s Children’s Waiting Room at the Family Court building. While there, he babysits the children of litigants and jurors. Further, he worked for St. Barnabas Health as a volunteer.
