Erin Kiernan Biography

Erin Kiernan is an American anchor and reporter working for 13 News as a weekday evening anchor at 5 pm, 6 pm, and 10 pm. She re-joined the 13 News team in June 2005, and in June 2006, she took up the evening anchoring position. 

Chadron, Nebraska is her native home and she began her broadcasting career at an early age as she would imitate television news reporters while dressing up in her mother’s clothes as a child. In 1992 she joined Drake University where she graduated in 1996, with a Bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. While still working on her Bachelor’s at Drake University, she worked at Channel 13 News as a part-time reporter and worked at WOI-TV as a photographer and reporter.

For her reporting work, she earned a number of regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and in 2012, she earned a National Edward R. Murrow Award with photojournalists Randy Schumacher and Brandon McCauley. They earned the award for a story about Iowan Mark Block overcoming impossible odds to climb Sears Tower in Chicago. In addition, she earned regional Emmy Awards in the consumer, feature, and instructional categories.

Furthermore, Kiernan was selected to receive the Iowa Commission of Persons with Disabilities Media Award in 2008, following her producing special reports on Iowans with disabilities. Prior to joining 13 News, she worked at KCCI from 1998, and in addition to anchoring, she also became well known for her award-winning special series pieces and investigative work. For Erin’s two-part series on date-rape drugs, she received a regional Edward R. Murrow award in the spring of 2004.

A regional Murrow Award was awarded to her in 2000, for her investigative series known as True Colors, which was focused on racism at bars in the Des Moines metro area. Kiernan has also done investigative series reports on; sex offenders, meth,  identity theft, ecstasy, arson, and unlicensed drivers. Over the years, she has been actively involved in the community as she volunteers for a number of on-profits and teaches fitness classes at the YMCA.

Furthermore, she is a huge advocate for adoptive families and birth families as she assisted in founding, Lowans for Adoption. She is also supportive of support groups for people dealing with infertility. During her leisure time, she enjoys being outdoors, seeing animals, watching sports, listening to music, and spending ample time with her family.
