Justin Surrency Biography

Justin Surrency is an American reporter/anchor working for 13 News as a weekday and weekend reporter. Surrency joined WHO-TV in July 2015, he worked at WIBW-TV in Topeka, Kansas where he served as an evening anchor and reporter. 

St. Paul, Minnesota is his native home and he has always had an affinity for communities with a diverse population. While he attended the University of Northern Iowa, he was selected to lead his college football team to a national championship game thus which provided him with invaluable experience in leadership and teamwork. He also had the opportunity to play in the NFL which added an ability to perform under a number of the most stressful and high-pressure situations. His love for reporting began while he worked at WCCO in Minneapolis as a sports intern.

While Surrency worked at WCCO, he witnessed a large metropolitan newsroom in action. After he joined the WHO-TV team in 2015, he did a detailed coverage of uncontrolled intersections in 2016, which was awarded by the Midwest Broadcast Journalist Association with an Eric Sevareid award for general reporting. While he worked in the Capital City for 4 years, he contributed live reports in three Heartland Emmy Award-winning newscasts, inclusive of providing live reports for 11 consecutive hours after two police officers were shot and killed. Furthermore, Justin won a Kansas Association of Broadcasters award for in-depth reporting.
