Fareed Zakaria Biography

Fareed Zakaria is an Indian-American author, host, and commentator working at CNN serving as the host of Fareed Zakaria GPS, and a columnist for The Washington Post. He joined CNN in 2008.

Zakaria went to the University of Miami, Brown, and Oberlin College where he attained his honorary degrees.  He also went to Yale University where he attained his bachelor’s degree and earned his doctorate in political science from Harvard University.

He also authored “The Post-American World” and “In Defense of a Liberal Education.” Fareed Zakaria GPS is a domestic and international affairs program on that airs Sundays on CNN/U.S. In addition to these roles, he also serves as the weekend anchor on CNN and also makes contributions to quarterly CNN/TIME magazine specials, CNN.com, and many other shows.

Zakaria also interviewed former U.S. president Bill Clinton, Senator Barack Obama, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, King Abdullah II, former U.S. vice president Al Gore, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm, U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice, and British Prime Minister David Cameron. He also interviewed Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, World Bank President Robert Zoellick, Turkish President Abdullah Gül, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and Martin Dempsey.

Zakaria also hosted “Restoring the American Dream” in October 2010 which featured exclusive interviews and offered infrequent insights into the international economic crisis. From 2000 to 2010, he worked at Newsweek International where he served as an editor. Prior to working at Newsweek, he previously worked as a managing editor of Foreign Affairs and was also leading the Journal of international economics and Politics from 1992 to 2010.

Prior to that, he worked at ABC News where he served as an analyst and was also a roundtable member of This Week with George Stephanopoulos ( the ABC News political affairs program). In addition to his roles at ABC News, he also served as the host of Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria on PBS.

Friedman” Zakaria called for an intergenerational initiative in Arab countries to create more transparent and diverse communities.
