Jay Trobec Biography
Jay Trobec is an American certified meteorologist currently working as the chief meteorologist and Television Broadcaster for KELOLAND TV in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He joined the station in September 1985.

Jay Trobec Career
He began his television career in an unusual manner. He worked as a sportscaster in North Dakota before moving to KELO in 1985 to work in the news department. In the 1990s, he began working full-time in the weather department. One of the most rewarding aspects of his work as Chief Meteorologist has been the opportunity to participate in professional organizations on a national and international scale. He has given numerous talks at the European Meteorological Society and “Forum International de la Météo et du Climat” meetings in Paris. He has attended world conferences in Europe and at the United Nations, and he has testified before the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee.
He currently serves as the chairman of the International Association of Broadcast Meteorology, which is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. He previously served as the American Meteorological Society’s Commissioner on Professional Affairs for six years. It was his responsibility to oversee the 13-thousand-member Society’s certification programs, as well as the Boards of Broadcast Meteorology, Certified Consulting Meteorologists, Private Sector Meteorologists, Operating Government Meteorologists, Early Career Professionals, and Continuing Professional Development.
In that capacity, he has been interviewed by a number of major newspapers and has appeared on television in a number of foreign countries. It was a lot of work, and it got a little stressful at times, but he considers himself fortunate to have worked with some of the meteorology’ best and brightest minds.
He enjoys teaching and has previously taught Physical Climatology and Meteorology at SDSU. In his spare time, he enjoys watching, playing, and reffing soccer. His formal credentials include the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and Certified Consulting Meteorologist designations, as well as the National Weather Association’s Broadcast Seal of Approval.
