Jay Trobec Biography

Jay Trobec is an American Emmy-Award-Winning Meteorologist/Anchor/Reporter working with KELLOLAND-TV in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he serves the station as a chief meteorologist and television broadcaster. He joined the station in the month of September 1985.

Trobec works with KELLOLAND-TV where he serves the station as a Chief Meteorologist and television broadcaster. He states that unlike most of his colleagues who claim they always wanted to focus on the weather career since childhood, she started her television career very differently. Trobec was working as a sportscaster in North Dakota before moving to KELO in order to work in the news department in the year 1985. He moved into the weather department full-time in the 1990s.

Among the most rewarding parts of his work as a Chief Meteorologist is that he has been able to participate in professional organizations nationally and internationally. Additionally, he also presented numerous talks at meetings of the European Meteorological Society and the “Forum International de la Météo et du Climat” in Paris. Asides from that, he also attended world conferences in Europe and at the United Nations and has testified before the Commerce Committee of the U.S. Senate.

He is now the chairman o the International Association of Broadcast Meteorology, based in Dublin, Ireland. Prior to that, he also served as Commissioner on Professional Affairs for the American Meteorological Society for about six years. Trobec states that it was his job to keep track of the certification programs for the 13-thousand-member Society.

Asides from that, he also oversees the Board of Broadcast Meteorology, the Board of Certified Consulting Meteorologists, the Board for Private Sector Meteorologists, the Board for Early Career Professionals, the Board for Continuing Professional Development, and s the Board for Operating Government Meteorologists.

In the role, he has been interviewed by several major newspapers and has also appeared on television in a few foreign countries. For him, it was a lot of work and sometimes he got a little stressed but considers himself fortunate to have worked with some of the best and brightest minds in meteorology.

Trobec says that he also enjoys teaching and has taught Physical Climatology and Meteorology at SDSU. Away from work, he enjoys playing, watching, and refereeing soccer. Additionally, his formal credentials include the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and Certified Consulting Meteorologist designations from the American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association Broadcast Seal of Approval.

Asides from this, he was named “Best Weathercast,” medium market, Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association (formerly NBNA). Additionally, he also won first place in 2009, 2007, 2005,2001, 1999, and 1998; Award of Merit in 2014, 2013, 2010, 2004, 2003, and the year 2000.

Additionally, Trobec was also named “Best Weathercast,” by South Dakota Associated Press, First place in 2004, 2000, and 1999. Asides from that, he was also named “Broadcast of the Year,” National Weather Association, in 2001. Asides from that, he was named “Award for Excellence in Meteorological Broadcasting,” International Association of Broadcast Meteorology, in 2011. Last but not least, he was named “Fellow of the American Meteorological Society,” in the year 2014.
