Mayern is the morning meteorologist for KVAL News in Eugene, OR. He previously worked as a meteorologist in Jackson, Mississippi, and Midland, Texas, and he is glad to be back in the Pacific Northwest.
John’s journey to Oregon has taken a few unexpected turns. He was unsure of his next step after graduating from Bowling Green State University in Ohio with a Bachelor’s in Geography. He decided to pursue a career in television after some soul-searching. John’s next stop was Starkville, Mississippi, where he earned a Master’s degree in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. That led to his first job on-air in 2014 and a love of the industry that continues to this day.
Working early mornings may not be for everyone, but John enjoys the opportunity to help you wake up bright and early every day! When he isn’t tracking the weather, John is…well, a homebody. As a self-described “indoor weatherman,” he enjoys the peace and quiet of a good lazy Sunday with a little gaming thrown in for good measure. He’s only one giant upside-down water bottle away from embracing the hamster lifestyle with his makeshift indoor gym.
