Hurst joined Grambling State University after finishing his high school education. He later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, emphasizing Broadcasting, Newspaper, and Public Relations. While on campus, he worked as a student news producer and ran talk programs and a newscast until the late James Penny put him on set when an anchor called in sick.

Further, he served as a morning and special assignments journalist at the CBS affiliate for 19 years.

Hurst is famous in the Alamo City for his business boosting food segment, “Neighborhood Eats,” and the diversity content collective, “Together We Rise.” He was fascinated with writing more than speaking, and realized that he could combine the two on television. He only thought of venturing into the advertising and or TV industry before a teacher told him he couldn’t write.

After graduating from college, Hurst started his TV career at KALB in Alexandria, where he was a crime and investigative reporter. He then served WBRZ in Baton Rouge in that same role before he became the lead reporter in the manhunt for Derrick Todd Lee, the South Louisiana serial killer.

Hurst worked as press director for the Office of Youth Services under Louisiana’s first female governor, the late Kathleen Babineaux Blanco. During his career, he has received multiple Associated Press awards for general news, investigative, and in-depth reporting. Additionally, he has won various Lone Star Emmys, including for Education/School News in 2024 for his series, “Kids Who Make San Antonio Great.” He also obtained Tellys (2024 Bronze) and the Texas Broadcast News Awards for “The Cartoon Saloon” (2024 Feature-light).

Hurst worked for the National Association of Black Journalists as a former co-chair of the Council of Presidents. He was also a member of the NABJ constitutional committee. The San Antonio Association of Black Journalists chose him as the president for five terms. He was Vice President and chaplain of the Grambling University National Alumni Association – San Antonio Chapter.

Hurst worked as an executive of the 100 Black Men of San Antonio. He was honored for media in the inaugural edition of Who’s Who in Black San Antonio. He believes in creating community success through mentoring and helped create the KENS 5 workplace mentoring program at KENS 5. Hurst also works as a coach, mentor, and advisor for journalists across the country.
