WJXX, virtual channel 25 (VHF digital channel 10), is an ABC-affiliated television station licensed to Orange Park that serves Jacksonville, Florida, in the United States. Tegna Inc. owns the station as part of a duopoly with Jacksonville-licensed NBC affiliate WTLV (channel 12). The two stations share studios on East Adams Street (near TIAA Bank Field) in downtown Jacksonville; WJXX’s transmitter is on Anders Boulevard in Jacksonville’s Killarney Shores neighborhood.
On February 9, 1997, the station went on the air for the first time. ABC signed a ten-year affiliation agreement with Allbritton Communications that year. This was prompted by Fox Television Stations’ purchase of ABC affiliate WBRC in July 1995. W58CK (now WBMA-LD) in Birmingham, Alabama, was an independent station at first. WJXX was supposed to debut as an independent station.
It was the first television station in the United States to be built entirely for digital television. The station’s new full-power transmitter was still awaiting FCC approval at the time, forcing it to broadcast at low power. Despite efforts to improve its signal, WJXX was unable to gain signal strength.
