Mike Cairns Career
Mike worked as a sideline reporter for the Cleveland Browns’ preseason games at WKYC-TV for five years, alongside Don Criqui and Todd Blackledge. Mike was part of a great team at WEWS-TV in 2015 that won an Emmy for Best Weekend Newscast.
Mike also worked for “SportsTime Ohio,” the Cleveland Indians’ regional sports home, where he was the main play-by-play voice for all high school and college sports. In 2009 and 2010, he received Tony Awards for his performance in the Division I state high school football championships.
Mike created his own show for SportsTime Ohio called “Tee It Up Ohio” in 2006, a golf show that traveled around the state of Ohio and eventually to such great destinations as Arizona, where he and his partner, PGA professional Jimmy Hanlin, provided golf fans with golf tips, rules, and local knowledge of the courses. The show aired for a total of seven years. Mike was inducted into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2012.
Mike was the weekend sports anchor at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C. for ten years before moving to Cleveland (ABC). Mike worked as a sideline reporter for the Washington Redskins’ preseason games at WJLA, alongside Hall of Famers Sonny Jurgenson and John Riggins. Mike’s hidden talent is singing the national anthem in the old Washington Capitals arena in Landover, Maryland. Mike began his broadcasting career in his hometown of Albany, New York, in 1985, after graduating from Plattsburg State University with a bachelor’s degree in Radio/Television Communications.
Mike began his career in radio as a morning sportscaster before landing his first TV job as a weekend sports anchor and then sports director at WRGB-TV. Mike has had enough winters and is eager to finally put his toes in the sand here in the Sunshine State and explore everything this wonderful state has to offer. You won’t have to look far to find him as an avid beach volleyball player. As an avid beach volleyball player, you won’t have to look far to find him diving in the sand on a Florida beach.
