Rachel Lucas Biography

Rachel Lucas is an American anchor and reporter working at WSLS where she serves as the weekday evening anchor at 5:30, 6, and 7 p.m. She joined the WSLS 10 News team in 2013 as a multi-media journalist.

Rachel Lucas Career

After joining the WSLS team in 2013 as a multi-media journalist, she was promoted to serving as a weekend morning anchor in 2015, and later in 2019, she was promoted to the weekday evening newscast. While working at WSLS, she has assisted the station winning many awards for r team coverage of a number of breaking news events across the region such as her investigative reporting of the after-effects of the Lynchburg train derailment. In addition, her reports helped spilled thousands of gallons of Bakken crude oil into the James River.

In 2006, she graduated from Giles High School and later joined Concord University in Athens, West Virginia where she pursued her dream of journalism. While she was a Mountain Lion, she represented her sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha as President and Concord’s 2009 Homecoming Queen. She also competed for Concord’s All-Girl Division II cheerleading squad. Lucas began news at her college news station after entering West Virginia Public Broadcasting and not long after she had graduated, she secured her first job at WVVA News in Bluefield, West Virginia.

In addition, while she was in Mountain State, she assisted in launching WVVA’s first news bureau in Greenbrier County. She also covered everything from the excitement of the PGA Tours Greenbrier Classic to the storm damage after the derecho. Furthermore, she assisted her news team to earn the Best Spot News Award from the West Virginia Broadcasters Association for covering the tragic shooting of a Virginia Tech police officer.

Rachel has in-depth experience in covering a variety of topics such as top stories in politics, crime, economics, the environment, health, and covering weather including the devastating EF3 tornado that hit Appomattox. In addition, she loves covering stories featuring the strengths of the local community and its people as she hopes to assist in bettering the community she was brought up in. Furthermore, she also enjoys covering animals as she is a true animal lover and covers anything to do with educating the public about the conservation of wildlife.

During her downtime, she enjoys helping to rehabilitate injured or orphaned wildlife, volunteering at the Southwest Virginia Wildlife in Roanoke, watching Hokie, watching football, and spending ample time with her family.
