Raj Mathai is an American Emmy-Award-Winning Anchor/Director working for NBC Bay Area where he serves the station as a Weeknight News Anchor. There, he anchors the evening news at 5:30, 6, 7, and 11 PM.

Mathai works with NBC Bay Area where he serves the station as a Weeknights Anchor. He happens to be among the most well-known journalists. Mathai interviews high-profile newsmakers such as Vice President Kamala Harris, General Colin Powell, 49ers owner Jed York, Gavin Newsom, and baseball legend Barry Bonds among others. Asides from this, he field anchors NBC Bay Area’s breaking news and big event coverage which includes the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami, the 2019 Gilroy mass shooting, and the 2017 Inauguration of Donald Trump.
He has been working with KNTV News since the year 1998 when he joined the station as a Sports Director before transitioning to primary news anchor in the year 2011. Asides from this, he has reported on-location from the Olympics in Vancouver, London, Athens, Tokyo, Turin, and Salt Lake City. He is among the handful of people in the world to have run the Olympics three times (1996, 2002, and 2008). Asides from this, he was part of the Giants broadcast team(2008-2012) with Jon Miller and Mike Krukow during NBC Bay Area telecasts of the Giants.
He was raised on the Peninsula and attended Los Altos High School. Later on, he went on to join San Diego State University where he obtained a Degree in Journalism and Political Science. Prior to arriving at NBC Bay Area, he also worked for NBC station in Fresno, Arizona, and San Diego.
The year 1995 saw him become the county’s first Indian sportscaster. Prior to his career in television, he also served as a public relations assistant for the San Diego Chargers for five seasons. He is on the Board of Governors for the San Francisco Symphony and the Board of Directors for the Asian Pacific Fund. Together with his family, they contribute to various Bay Area charities. Asides from this, he is a regular guest instructor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He was born and raised in Trivandrum, India.
