Darren Sweeney Biography
Darren Sweeney is an American journalist who serves as Meteorologist and Reporter at NBC CONNECTICUT (WVIT-TV). He is also an Associate Professor at Central Connecticut State University. Sweeney appears on NBC CT on weekend mornings.
His passion for weather began at an early age seeing all of New England’s wild weather extremes. His family realized his fascination with the weather when he would grab a camera and go outdoors instead of taking shelter like the rest when the weather was not favorable.
As an associate professor in the field of journalism, Sweeney mentors students who are looking forward to diving into the field of journalism and broadcast journalism. Darren also serves on the board of the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists.

Sweeney attended Central Connecticut State University from 1993 to 1998, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. In 1999, he joined Syracuse University pursuing a master’s degree in broadcast journalism, and graduated in 2000. Sweeney pursued a degree in broadcast meteorology at Mississippi State University graduating in 2003.

Sweeney began his television career at the Fox affiliate WFTX-TV (Fox 4) in Fort Myers, Florida in November 2000. There, he gained experience forecasting severe weather and chasing hurricanes. A couple of times in 2002, he was deployed to New Orleans to help sister stations cover Tropical Storm “Isidore” and Hurricane “Lilly”.
Darren later joined WWLP-TV in Springfield Massachusetts. For his work there, he won two Associated Press awards for coverage of historic flooding in October 2005 and in 2006 for Best Weathercast. Darren reported live during the enormous flooding that took place along the Merrimack River in May 2006. He also served as a meteorologist and reporter for CBS affiliate WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, United States.
Sweeney came to NBC Universal Media, LLC in October 2008 and joined the First Alert forecast team. As a result, he gained recognition from the American Meteorological Society (AMS) with their seal of approval. National Weather Association (NWA) also recognized him with their seal of approval. For his coverage of the 2009 EF-1 Wethersfield tornado, Darren was honored with a “Breaking News” award by the Connecticut Society for Professional Journalists.
