Jay Trobec is an American Emmy-Award-Winning Meteorologist working for KELLOLAND-TV as the chief meteorologist. He joined KELOLAND’s news department in 1985 and transitioned to the Storm Center full-time in the 1990s.

Trobec joined St. John’s University after finishing his high school education. Later, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He furthered his studies at Mississippi State University, where he obtained his Master of Arts degree. He also has a Ph.D. in Atmospheric, Environmental, and Water Resources from South Dakota State University.

Trobec works as the chief meteorologist for KELOLAND Storm Center. In this capacity, he has been interviewed by notable American newspapers and national TV networks in multiple countries. Moreover, he taught physical climatology and meteorology at South Dakota State University.
Unlike other meteorologists who decided to pursue a weather career during childhood, Trobec took a different approach when starting his television career. He worked as a sportscaster in North Dakota before moving to KELOLAND’s news department in 1985. In the 1990s, he transitioned to the Storm Center full-time.
Trobec has talked about weather events at over forty national and international conferences in the US and Europe. He has also verified weather communication before the Commerce Committee of the US Senate. Besides his work on the screen, he chairs the Dublin-based International Association of Broadcast Meteorology. Previously, he was the Commissioner on Professional Affairs for the American Meteorological Society. In this role, he supervised the certification programs for the 12-thousand-member society.

During his career, Trobec has won several honors and awards, including the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and Certified Consulting Meteorologist designations from the American Meteorological Society. Also, he has the National Weather Association Broadcast Seal of Approval.
Trobec has received 14 Emmy nominations between 2002 and 2021, including 2 nominations in 2016, 2014, and 2011. The International Association of Broadcast Meteorology honored him with its Award for Excellence in Meteorological Broadcasting in 2011.
In 2010, Trobec won an Emmy Award for “Best Weathercast.” He has also received Emmy Awards for Weather Anchor from the National Television Academy, Upper Midwest Chapter, 2023, 2014, 2010, 2006, 2004, and 2001.
The Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association (formerly NBNA) honored him with first-place honors for Best Weathercast in medium market in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, and 2009. Also, he received the organization’s Award of Merit in 2014, 2013, 2010, 2004, 2003, and 2000. In 2001, he won the National Weather Association Broadcaster of the Year Award.
