Luke Dorris Biography
Luke Dorris is an American certified broadcast meteorologist currently working at the Local 10 Weather Authority. He joined the station in 2017 in time for Hurricane Irma.
Luke Dorris Career
Luke went to college to study automotive engineering and got a part-time job in a beer distribution warehouse, where he used a forklift to load beer trucks after classes. It was here that his life changed forever.
He was working in the warehouse on a particularly hot summer evening when a storm blew in and started raining, then hailing so hard that drivers from the nearby state highway pulled into the parking lot to wait out the storm. The front of the building’s awning blew off and landed on one of the vehicles. The aluminum-sided warehouse shook violently and then partially collapsed. Luke thought he was hit by a tornado, but it turned out to be a “microburst,” or severe straight-line winds exceeding 90 mph.
Luke, who was as fascinated as he was terrified, transferred to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in meteorology and chased storms whenever he could. He also had the opportunity to intern with Gary England, Michael Armstrong, and the KWTV weather team in Oklahoma City.
Luke relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he eventually rose to the position of chief meteorologist at KLKN. During his time there, he witnessed numerous tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and snowstorms. He also earned the American Meteorological Society’s certified broadcast meteorologist designation, the highest level of certification available to broadcast meteorologists.
