John Pruitt is a retired American journalist working for WSB on its special projects and political commentaries. Previously, he served the station as an anchor till his retirement in July 2010, ending his 46-year career run and a 41-year run as a late news anchor. He delivered his last newscast at 11 p.m. on July 7, 2010.

Prior to his retirement, he joined WSB-TV in 1967 as a reporter before he was promoted to work as a weekend anchor. In 1973, he started working as an anchor of the 6 and 11 p.m. In 1978, he left the station and joined WXIA where he worked as an evening news anchor. He then rejoined WSB in 1994 after working as an anchor for the 6 and 11 p.m. news.

His television news career started when he worked as a cameraman and reporter broadcasting big civil rights stories around the South. He then joined the U.S. Army where he worked as an infantry lieutenant in South Korea and Fort Gordon from 1965 to 1967.

Pruitt has broadcasted some huge stories during his career like the burial of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jimmy Carter’s gubernatorial and presidential campaigns, 11 Democratic and Republican conventions, the Civil Rights Movement, and the 1968 abduction of heiress Barbara Jane Mackle. Also, he broadcasted the San Francisco Bay-region earthquake in 1989, the 1983 U.S. Marine barracks bombing in Beirut, the presidential swearing-ins of Presidents Carter and Clinton, the initial flight of Lockheed’s C5 Galaxy, and the aftereffects of the September 11th assault on the World Trade Center.

Pruitt serves as an inductee of the Atlanta Press Club of Fame and the Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Also, he serves as a board member of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and The Nature Conservancy of Georgia. He actively serves Fix Georgia Pets and other charitable efforts.

During his anchoring and reporting career, he has received numerous awards. For instance, he has won 10 Emmys, including Best Male Anchor and Best Documentary. Also, he has won five Sigma Delta Chi Quill Awards, the Georgia Winner Public Service Award, and the Father of the Year Award. For broadcasting Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign and broadcast of a north Georgia airliner crash, he won a UPI Award.

The University of Georgia journalism school awarded him a Pioneer Broadcaster Award. He received the Silver Circle Award from the National Academy of Radio Arts and Sciences. For his work in public service, Presbyterian College granted him an Honorary Doctorate Degree in 2004. In 2006, he won the Distinguished Achievement in Broadcasting Award from DiGammaKappa at the University of Georgia School of Journalism.
