Cindy Fitzgibbon Biography
Cindy Fitzgibbon is an Armenian-American journalist who serves as the chief meteorologist for WCVB StormTeam 5 in Boston Massachusetts.
She made history as the first female chief meteorologist in the Boston television news market, after her appointment in July 2022. This was after the retirement of veteran meteorologist Harvey Leonard. This marked a significant chapter in her career and a celebration of women in the field of broadcast meteorology.
Fitzgibbon’s passion for weather began as a young girl growing up near Portland, Maine with an eye to the sky. She was very curious about the weather and curious about the snow. She even maintained a journal of snow measurements that she would share with her disinterested friends.

Fitzgibbon began her forecasting career at KXMB in Bismarck, North Dakota in 1995 only one week after graduating from college. At the age of 21, she became that market’s first accredited meteorologist. In 1996, she moved to WPTZ (Burlington, Vermont-Plattsburgh, New York market). At WPTZ, she forecasted snowstorms. Four years later, she traveled to the Sunshine State and became the first female degree meteorologist at WBBH in Fort Myers, Florida.
Fitzgibbon eventually return, beginning her ed to New England decades-long career in the Boston market. There, she began by delivering her morning forecasts at WFXT (Boston 25). In 2013, she joined WCVB serving as a StormTeam 5’s EyeOpener and Midday meteorologist a role she served for nearly a decade.
She was promoted to chief meteorologist in July 2022. Fitzgibbon has made guest appearances on ABC News filling in on World News Tonight and on Good Morning America. She serves as the principal meteorologist for WCVB’s “Forecasting Our Future” special ongoing coverage. She is also a member of both the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society (AMS).
Fitzgibbon is dedicated and devotes her time to several organizations such as the Jr. Sci-Tech Girl STEM Expo, the Discovery Museum “Smart Gals” Program, and the Science Club for Girls that promote science education for young girls. She also helps in raising money for local organizations which are involved in fighting ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and MS (multiple sclerosis). Cindy also spreads awareness about Batten Disease. She shares her knowledge and experience in weather with students across the area over the years.
