Mike Wankum Biography
Mike Wankum is an American veteran Emmy-award-winning journalist who serves as a weeknight Meteorologist at WCVB-TV 5 in Boston. Wankum anchors for all of the station’s evening and late newscasts (M-F, 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM, 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 11:00 PM). He also anchors the 10 O’Clock News on MeTV Boston.
In his forecasting career of over four decades, Wankum has been recognized for his great work. He has received 16 regional Emmy Awards for both his weather coverage and technology reporting. He has also been recognized by the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association (MBA), and the Associated Press.
Wankum is a member of the American Meteorological Society. He has also earned his Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation.

Wankum attended Briar Cliff University and later got his Masters degree in Atmospheric Science at Creighton University in the heart of Tornado Alley.

Wankum began his career at KTIV-TV in Sioux City, Iowa Area as a Staff Meteorologist. In 1982, he was promoted to become chief meteorologist until his departure in 1990. In 1990, he joined WTVR-TV in Richmond, Virginia Area as chief meteorologist. During his time there, he got his first Emmy award.
In 1993, he joined WLVI-TV Boston in Greater Boston Area where he served for 13 years as a chief meteorologist. There, he received 8 Emmy Awards and 3 Associated Press awards for his weathercasts.

In 2006, Wankum joined WCVB’s StormTeam 5 as a meteorologist. He has also served as a weather producer and reporter. Wankum served as a contributor to the weekend edition of ABC World News. He is the producer and reporter for “Cutting Edge”, a show documenting Technology breakthroughs in Boston. The show has been honored as the best TV series by Mass Broadcasters in 2018. Wankum has also made appearances on ESPN Sports Center. He was named one of the “Coolest Meteorologists in America” by the Washington Post in November 2017.
Wankum serves as a guest science lecturer at Boston area schools and universities. He is a former chairman of the Chernobyl Children Project USA. Mike is greatly involved in various local charitable organizations.
