Harvey Leonard Biography
Harvey Leonard Moskowitz is an American journalist who formerly served as a television news chief meteorologist on WCVB-TV Channel 5 in Boston, Massachusetts. He is also Boston’s most experienced meteorologist currently serving as Channel 5’s chief meteorologist emeritus.
Before his retirement from his previous role as chief meteorologist on May 25, 2022, Leonard had a meteorology career of 5 decades. For twenty-five years, he forecasted weather in New England and twenty at WCVB.

Leonard attended the City College of New York from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology. He went ahead to earn a Master of Science degree in meteorology from New York University in 1970. While there, he also served as an instructor in meteorology.
Harvey Leonard Career
Leonard began his forecasting career at Universal Weather Services, Inc working as a meteorologist. There, he prepared forecasts for aviation and industry and taped reports for radio stations in Connecticut and New York. He later moved to WPRI in Providence, RI where he served as chief meteorologist for 3 years.
For twenty years, he served as chief meteorologist of Boston’s WHDH (originally WNAC-TV). He initially joined as a staff meteorologist and in 1982, he was made chief meteorologist. This was after the station was sold to New England Television and renamed WNEV-TV. He held his role for 20 years even after the station was again renamed to WHDH in 1990. During his time at WHDH, he was named “Best Meteorologist” by Boston Magazine in 1984, 1986, 1988, and 1992. In 1980, Harvey also served as a meteorologist at 105.7 WROR, a radio station in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Leaving WHDH-TV in April 2002, he joined WCVB as Storm Team 5’s co-chief meteorologist with his longtime friend Dick Albert, who later retired in 2009. After Albert’s retirement, Harvey was promoted to chief meteorologist at WCVB. Leonard retired in May 2022 transitioning into his new role as chief meteorologist emeritus for WCVB. Bearing this position, he serves the community with vital information as a periodic contributor to StormTeam 5 coverage. Leonard also engages in community speaking appearances.
Giving back greatly to the community, Leonard is involved in the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. He participates in providing support and services for those living with the disease and their loved ones and also helps find a cure. Leonard has joined the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event as co-master of ceremonies and also emceed for Boston Prostate Cancer Walk. He is also a huge supporter of the Boston Medical Center. Harvey has served as an honored guest speaker at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and (MIT) Harvard Business School.
Leonard has mentored aspiring meteorologists who have gone ahead and become on-air meteorologists in markets across the United States.

Leonard has earned four New England Emmy Awards for outstanding achievement in television forecasting. He was honored with the prestigious Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Boston/New England Emmys in 2016. In 2018, he was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Harvey was chosen for induction into the prestigious 2021 Gold Circle presented by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Boston/New England Chapter. This serves as an honor of his fifty years of outstanding contributions to the industry.
